STORYLINE:
US President Barack Obama and his family left Washington, DC on Wednesday morning for a weeklong visit to Africa.
The first family departed Joint Base Andrews in Prince George’s County, Maryland, en route to Senegal.
Visits to South Africa and Tanzania are also scheduled.
On his second trip to sub-Saharan Africa, Obama is accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters, Malia and Sasha,
The trip is seen as part of efforts to reenergise engagement with the rising continent.
Atop Obama’s agenda will be economic development, trade and investment, democracy and democratic institution building and engagement with Africa’s youth.
The health of former South African President Nelson Mandela is hanging over the planned trip.
Mandela is hospitalised in South Africa and surrounded by family.
White House advisers say they will defer to the anti-apartheid leader’s relatives on whether he’s up for a visit from Obama.
Missing from Obama’s itinerary is Kenya, his father’s birthplace and home to many of his relatives.
Kenya’s new President is facing war crimes charges, making it an awkward time for a US President to visit.
