Nigeria's 'Japa' generation: Skilled youth leaving country in droves • FRANCE 24 English

For the past two or three years, the “Japa” syndrome, which means “to run, flee or escape” in Yoruba, has been spreading among middle-class Nigerian youth. Students, doctors, real estate agents and professionals in the leisure and tech industries are rushing to consulates in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom to obtain visas. Struck by a deep disatisfaction with life in Nigeria – inequality, lack of opportunity, insecurity, corruption- generations Y and Z no longer believe in Nigeria as a leading economic power in Africa.
