Nigerian government ban on markets begins in Lagos

(27 Mar 2020) A Nigerian government ban on non-essential businesses and markets took effect in Lagos on Thursday as part of measures aimed at curbing the spread of the new coronavirus.
In the city’s popular Balogun market, traders expressed their concerns about the prospect of not being able to generate enough income to meet their daily needs during the ban.
The market, which is a major trading hub for West African textile traders, is located in in the central business district area is usually packed with thousands of people daily.
Nigeria currently has at least 65 confirmed cases of the virus including one death.
For most people, the COVID-19 illness causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks.
For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
