Protesters gathered in front of the Federal High Court of Nigeria on Monday to support Nigerian pro-Biafra political activist Nnamdi Kanu during his trial, which was then subsequently adjourned to October.

Kanu is the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) which aims at restoring the separatist state of Biafra.

The IPOB leader stands trial for charges of terrorism, treasonable felony, and illegal possession of arms. He left the country for Kenya breaking bail terms in 2017. He was then arrested again in 2021 and extradited to Nigeria.

A Biafran supporter said that “if this government has been fair this wouldn’t have happened. If you can remember, when the agitators were on a rally, what has happened between them and the military? So many of them were killed.” He concluded that “the government should just look at it and be fair on the judgments.”

The Biafran war that started in 1967 and lasted until 1970 saw the defeat of the rising Biafran state and the confirmation of the territorial integrity of Nigeria.

SOT, Biafran supporter: “I want to say this problem has been there, even this government. What is trigger? I think it’s is hunger. And the way the government is ruling people are no longer happy with what is happening in the society. So I think that is what triggers the agitation of Mr Nnamdi Kanu, I mean the IPOB leader and Sunday Igboho.”
