Here’s the review of the IMP used in this test:

***PLEASE NOTE This is NOT meant to be a “competition” between these rations to see which is packaged the “best”. It’s simply a test of the waterproof qualities of different rations. While the IMP didn’t stand up well when submerged in water, it was also not necessarily designed to be waterproof. My thought is that more weight was given to biodegradability in the IMP than the MRE. That paper bag would break down very quickly if left outdoors. I think that even the thin foil lining would break down pretty quick (especially in comparison to the tough, thick plastic of the MRE).***

I’ve heard a lot of people asking about how water resistant or waterproof a Canadian IMP (Individual Meal Pack) is. It’s something I’ve wondered about myself. The fact that the IMP is packaged in what looks like a brown paper bag instead of the tough plastic outer bag of the MRE leads to those kinds of questions. Here’s my attempt to test it. I decided to include a genuine issue MRE and a commercial one at the same time. There really wasn’t much question about how they’d do, but it seemed worth at least putting them into the mix as well.
