How Bellerin & Tierney Will Evolve Emery’s Arsenal | Starting XI, Formation & Tactics

How Bellerin & Tierney will evolve Emery’s Arsenal Starting XI looking at how the Spanish head coach will adapt his formation and tactics. Unai Emery’s Arsenal have had a disappointing start to the season in a defensive sense, already conceding 10 goals in the first six Premier League season. But with Hector Bellerin & Kieran Tierney coming back from Injury – Unai Emery could have a more reliable back four for the rest of the season.

So how will Bellerin & Tierney will evolve Emery’s Arsenal? Well first, let’s dive into what Emery requires from his full backs. The Spanish tactician has a reputation for developing full backs as they become key cogs to how his teams attack. Generally as Emery’s sides enter the final third, the attacking midfielders narrow and the full backs hold the width. From this narrow position, they then look for through balls or combination play to get the full backs into dangerous crossing positions. From these positions, they are instructed to play low crosses into the box, either at the near post, back post or more frequently cut backs to the penalty spot. This style has been prevalent through Emery’s coaching career, more obvious at Sevilla and PSG, but less at Arsenal. We have seen moments at Arsenal. Take Arsenal’s second goal vs. Watford. Ozil is in a narrow position on the inside right channel, he feeds Ainsley Maitland-Niles in behind the defence, who’s low cross is met by Aubameyang at the back post.

Hector Bellerin would bring the right balance at right-back, whilst Maitland-Niles managed to do well going forward – especially with his performances in the Europa League run last season, the England u21 international was involved in three goals in the knockout stages in Europa. But he’s naturally a winger, which works in his favour when Arsenal play in a back three with wing-backs. The lack of natural defensive ability has seen The Gunners struggle when Niles has started at right-back. Hector Bellerin would be more of a natural option for Arsenal, he’s proven what he can do going forward, of all Premier League full-backs to play 1000+ minutes last season, only Trent Alexander-Arnold (0.4) averaged more assists per game than Héctor Bellerín last season (0.3) and pre the Spanish international’s injury we got to see more of a defensive side to his game.

The fact is Hector Bellerin & Kieran Tierney – would be considered clear upgrades on the current fullback pairing of Sead Kolasinac & Ainsley Maitland-Niles. What’s important is for Unai Emery to coach Tierney & Bellerin into understanding their current roles in the side, knowing when to sit and allow the other fullback to venture off. Scotland international Kieran Tierney, is again more suited than Kolasinac to play at left-back, Bosnian international Kolasinac was always more of a wing-back and having Tierney replace him at left-back will bring more of a balance as that’s the role the Scottish youngster played at Cletic.

Will the additions of Bellerin & Tierney at fullback guarantee at top four finish at the Emirates?
