Ghanaian presidential candidate, former President Mahama happy voting is peaceful

John Dramani Mahama, Ghana’s former president and the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Saturday voted in Bole, a town in the nation’s northern region.

Over 18 million Ghanaians went to the polls to elect new lawmakers and a successor to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Mahama, who led Ghana from 2012-2016, is looking to succeed Akufo-Addo, after losing to the departing president in the 2016 general elections.

Mahama is running against the nation’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate and current Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia.

Experts say they predict a tight race between Mahama and Bawumia. However, the former president is favored to win.

Speaking with news media after casting his ballot, Mahama said he is happy that elections have been peaceful thus far.

The former president also said he hopes that during vote counting, democracy will be practiced and there will be no electoral fraud or rigging.
