Koyoharu Gotouge is the author and illustrator of the Japanese manga series Demon Slayer. It centers on teenage Tanjiro Kamado, who aspires to become a demon hunter following the massacre of his family and the transformation of his younger sister Nezuko into a monster. From February 2016 to May 2020, it was published in Shueisha's shounen manga magazine Weekly Shonen Jump, and its episodes were compiled in 23 tankbon volumes. Viz Media and Shueisha both released it concurrently on their Manga Plus platforms in English.

From April to September 2019, a Ufotable-produced anime television series adaptation with 26 episodes aired in Japan. The highest-grossing anime film and Japanese film of all time, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train, was released in October 2020. The anime series has a second season that ran from October 2021 to February 2022, adapting the "Mugen Train" arc from the movie in seven episodes and covering the "Entertainment District" arc from the manga in eleven episodes.

The story is set in Taisho-era Japan, where the Demon Slayer Corps, a clandestine organization, has been fighting demons covertly for centuries. The demons are ex-humans who Muzan Kibutsuji transformed into demons by injecting them with his own blood. They feed on humans and have superhuman skills including tremendous strength, the kind of ability that only demons can have known as "Blood Demon Art," regeneration, and regeneration.

Demons can only be put to death by being decapitated with weapons made of an alloy called Sun Steel, being poisoned with wisteria flower extract, or being exposed to sunlight. While the Demon Slayers are totally human, they use unique breathing methods called "Breathing Styles," which give them superhuman power and enhanced resilience. This improves their chances of defeating demons.
