Aston Villa 1-3 West Ham | Opposition Match Reaction w/ Liam from the Total Villain

It was Aston Villa 1-3 West Ham in the Premier League this evening with David Moyes’ men bouncing back with a convincing team performance against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

West Ham’s pressing from the attacking four players made it difficult for Villa to play out from the back, enabling West Ham to keep possession in the final third and push the full-backs higher up. West Ham had a number of chances in the first-half with Jesse Lingard playing between the lines and retaining possession against a high-energy Aston Villa.

Despite having a few chances on goal, Villa’s Ollie Watkins had a number of opportunities to capitalise on a few errors from Craig Dawson but failed to convert these opportunities. Although Villa threatened, West Ham’s high press and defensive solidity through the work of Declan Rice enabled them to control the game.

The only element lacking to the performance was composure and quality in the final third and West Ham secured this within the first 10 minutes of the second-half. Tomas Soucek broke the Aston Villa defensive line to latch onto a fantastic Said Benrahma pass and finish past Emi Martinez, who had an uncharacteristically poor game.

West Ham made it 2-0 through the movement and composure of Jesse Lingard, who provided an additional run to latch onto a Michail Antonio ball and, with the exception of a poor save, dispatched his finish well.

Aston Villa grew into the game as West Ham began to sit deeper and the energy of the press diminished. They began to dictate the possession and, although the likes of Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish threatened, West Ham defended well for the majority of the last quarter.

The decision to switch Grealish to the right provided a direct outlet from deep and began to trouble Cresswell and this told when Grealish drew Cresswell out of position to find an onrushing Ollie Watkins who finished well.

There was no comeback, however, as West Ham finished the game with another goal from Jesse Lingard, who once again found space in the area to seal the goal for West Ham and ensure they remain fifth in the Premier League.

Here’s the opposition match-reaction with Liam from the Total Villain, discussing his thoughts on the game, as well as where he thinks Villa can finish this season.
