Ghana VP and presidential candidate Bawumia hopes for peaceful election

Ghana’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), cast his ballot Saturday in his hometown of Walewale, as the country held its general election to select new lawmakers and President Nana Akufo-Addo’s successor.

Speaking with journalists after voting, Bawumia called on “all Ghanaians to get up and get to the polling stations, queue peacefully and vote.”

Bawumia said he hopes all registered voters “exercise their right to vote,” adding, “let this be a very peaceful election.”

Over 18 million Ghanaians are registered to vote in Ghana’s December 7 elections.

Bawumia is among 12 presidential aspirants. His main rival is former President John Dramani Mahama, who is running under the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
