Votes are being counted in Ghana after presidential and parliamentary elections. Initial results suggest that the incumbent Nana Akufo-Addo is ahead of his rival, the former president John Mahama. The ruling National Patriotic Party is also reported to be leading in the parliamentary polls. The governing New Patriotic Party claims that Akufo-Addo has secured more than six million votes from 88 percent of polling stations. This is an almost 53% share of ballots counted. The Party is also confident of maintaining a majority in parliament when certified results are declared. The New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress have alternated power since military rule ended in 1992. This is the third straight election in which Akufo-Addo and Mahama have faced off. The vote was peaceful, consistent with Ghana’s reputation as one of West Africa’s most stable democracies. The two sides agreed last week to resolve any disputes in court.
