Ghana’s Electoral Commission declared John Dramani Mahama, former president and main opposition leader, the winner of Saturday’s presidential election with 56.55% of the vote, based on provisional results. Mahama’s main rival, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, conceded defeat on Sunday in both the presidential and legislative elections, helping to ease tensions. The commission reported that votes from 267 of the country’s 276 constituencies had been counted, with a voter turnout of 60.9%. Mahama, 66, is returning to power after his presidency from 2012 to 2016, criticizing Bawumia for representing the policies that led to Ghana’s worst economic crisis in a generation.
