The events leading up to and during the Battle of Okinawa, focusing on Desmond Doss, a deeply religious Seventh-day Adventist who refused to carry a weapon due to his beliefs. Despite initial ridicule, Doss earned the respect of his comrades through his bravery and dedication as a medic. The story highlights his role in preparing for the assault on the Maeda Escarpment by attaching cargo nets and ladders under cover of darkness. During the battle, Doss’s prayers became a symbol of hope for his unit.
On May 5, 1945, Doss was asked to go up the escarpment despite it being his Sabbath. He agreed after finishing his religious reading. The battle did not go as planned, and Doss found himself alone, tending to the wounded while under heavy fire. He used ropes and knots to lower injured soldiers down the cliff, saving over 75 men in a heroic five-hour effort.
Doss being injured later in the war and showing further acts of selflessness before receiving the Medal of Honor from President Truman for his actions at Hacksaw Ridge.
