George Floyd protests: Police disperse peaceful protest for Trump photo op outside church

Shortly after addressing the nation on Monday night about the George Floyd protests, U.S. President Donald Trump walked from the White House to St. John’s Church across from Lafayette Park for a photo op with a bible.

The 200-year-old church near the White House was set on fire as demonstrators clashed with police over the weekend.

Law enforcement cleared protesters out of the area with tear gas before Trump’s visit. Tear gas canisters could be heard exploding as Trump spoke to the nation in the Rose Garden. He then walked over to the church.

Police and Secret Service personnel deployed tear gas as they cleared a path, clearing protesters in preparation for the Trump walk-out.

Global’s Jackson Proskow reports that the crowd was acting peacefully before police deployed tear gas in an attempt to clear them in advance of Trump’s walk.

According to Proskow, warnings were given to protesters to disperse although they were not heard in all parts of the crowd. President Trump’s curfew had not yet gone into effect when police cleared the protesters.

Trump held a bible as he posed for photos along with members of his administration in front of the church.
